Our Strongest Advertisement
John 13:34-35 (KJV) A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. When Lisa moved to the city and had to live in an apartment for the first time, she noticed that the people in the city were very paranoid and independent. It was so difficult for her to make new friends, and she also observed that even her neighbors did not know her nor did they care to know her. But with time, she observed that in spite of how closed-hearted the people in the city were, there was a group of people that were really warm and open-hearted. They visited each other and truly cared for one another. She also observed that after Jake, her former colleague, joined them, he became warmer, nicer, happier, and he now had visitors in his apartment and friends who truly loved him. They were the only ones who took him in when he lost his job and became temporarily homeless. As Lisa observed that these people truly loved one another, she wanted to be part of them because she too wanted to be truly loved. The sincere love among the Christians in her neighborhood was what brought Lisa to the knowledge of Christ. She knew that it had to be the power of God at work for them to be that real and loving. She had been a member of many societies and community associations, and she had seen first hand how the best of human arrangements to create an environment of love had failed woefully. She had also been a member of other religious groups before she became a secular humanist, and the fact that the Christians were the only ones who actually succeeded in achieving a community of sincere love was proof to her that Christ is the way. There is a power that we have as people born of God that cannot be found anywhere else. It is the power to love in truth(1 John 4:7). Without the divine life, the best version of love man can exhibit would prove to be self-centered and inconsistent. But those who are born of God have the capacity to truly love and truly forgive. Go into today remembering that when you walk in love, you’re obeying the Lord, and obedience is one of the strongest keys to promotion in the kingdom of God. When we love one another as believers, we are demonstrating that we are truly born of God, and this is actually our strongest advertisement to the world (both spiritual and physical). Prayer: Lord, help me walk in love and be a good advertisement of Your nature to the world around me. Spiritual Enlightenment
Ephesians 1:18-19 (KJV) The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power After innocent accepted the Lord Jesus, there were many things about the kingdom of God he did not understand, but unlike so many believers today, he sought to understand them. Innocent wanted to walk in the reality of God’s power since he once read in his Bible that the kingdom of God is not in word but in power(1 Corinthians 4:20). Because of this desire to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of God, Innocent had a great hunger for the word of God. Anywhere he heard that the word of God was taught with sincerity, he would listen. He bought many books and spent money to attend many conferences. He downloaded hundreds of sermons and listened to them. He read the Bible daily and sought to pray more and more. As time passed, even innocent did not realize how much he had grown until he met the person that led him to Lord when they were on campus. This person had to confess that innocent now knew so many things that even he did not know, and as a result, walked more in the reality of God [and His Power] than most believers he knew. Those who seek the kingdom of God as their first priority cannot be at the same level as those who do not(see Matthew 11:12). Today’s Bible verses capture part of Paul’s prayer for the saints everywhere. It is the desire of God that the eyes of our understanding be enlightened. This is when we can know the riches of our inheritance and the exceeding greatness of God’s power made available for us. Note that today’s verses didn’t say “that we may know about the riches of our inheritance”, it says “that we may know the riches of our inheritance”. There is a difference between knowing about me and knowing me. Knowing me involves dealing with me personally, but one can know about me by merely reading about me or studying me from afar. When the eyes of our understanding are truly enlightened, we will not just know about the riches of our inheritance and the power thereof, we would start experiencing the foretaste of these things, and as a result, would groan in expectant hope as we await the resurrection, which would usher us into the fullness of these things(see Romans 8:23, Philippians 3:20-21). Go into today knowing that any believer who still has a worldly outlook on life; and still lives for this world(rather than for God’s kingdom) is walking in terrible spiritual ignorance and has shortchanged himself. Such an outlook on life limits our ability to know the riches of our inheritance and the power thereof. Prayer: Lord, please enlighten the eyes of my understanding and help me know the riches of my inheritance in you. Deliver me from every spirit of distraction, in Jesus’ name. The Wise Seek the Lord
Psalms 14:2 (NET) The Lord looks down from heaven at the human race, to see if there is anyone who is wise and seeks God. One of the signs of wisdom is that people will seek the Lord. One of the biggest privileges we have through the indwelling Holy Spirit is the wisdom(Isaiah 11:2) of God which manifests in the desire to seek the Lord. When a believer observes that he no longer has the desire to spend quality time seeking the Lord, it is an indication of a spiritual disease. The way God created us as humans, we are not self-sufficient. We need the help of God to survive and prosper. Only fools do not realize this. Over the course of human history, as iniquity abounded, many turned away from the true God, and in order for them to get the much-needed spiritual help that humans need, they looked to idols and other gods(principalities and powers: spiritual wickedness in heavenly places). These are the gods that the nations worshiped, and many still worship today. But we have the privilege through our Lord Jesus Christ to access God the father and creator of all things. This privilege should never be taken for granted. We do not only have the privilege to know God but we also have the privilege to reconcile people to God. We do this by preaching the gospel and making disciples of all people. This is the most important thing going on in the world today: people being reconciled to God. Go into today remembering that the source of your life and prosperity is in staying connected to God. Avoid Walking In the Flesh
Romans 8:12-13 (NET) So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh (for if you live according to the flesh, you will die), but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live. There is the sad but true story of a pastor’s wife who became adulterous and rebellious. With time she denied the faith and became an atheist. This happened because as she continued to unrepentantly walk in the flesh, she died spiritually. When a believer continuously walks in the flesh (by committing sinful acts) in open rebellion, that believer is committing sin leading unto [spiritual] death. We are instructed in 1John 5:16 not to even waste our prayers on such believers. Some argue that those who have denied the faith did so because they were never really truly saved in the first place, but there is no scripture to back that assertion, only sentiments. But there are scriptures that clearly say people fall away(Hebrews 10:39, 6:4-6), deny the faith(1 Timothy 5:8), have a shipwreck of the faith(1 Timothy 1:19), die spiritually (Romans 8:13, Revelation 3:1-2), etc. We can learn from today’s Bible verse that the reason for this is continuing to walk in the flesh. Walking in the flesh leads to spiritual death. Faith in God is a most precious treasure(see 1Peter 1:7), one that we should fight to keep (see 1 Timothy 6:12). But one can lose this priceless treasure if by walking unrepentantly in the flesh, he continues to violate his conscience. Faith is spiritual, and the sensor of the human spirit is his conscience. A ship with damaged sensors would have a shipwreck. When you see someone who was once a believer getting to a point where he denies the faith, it usually is because he died spiritually due to walking in the flesh and continuous violation of his conscience (see 1 Timothy 1:19). One of the biggest dangers of doctrines that make believers comfortable in their sins (while invoking ‘grace’ and refusing to repent) is that some of such believers can come to a point of denying the faith because they have walked in the flesh unrepentantly for so long to the point of spiritual death.Sin is antithetical to faith, and the devil understands this too well. He understands that if he can get believers to walk in the flesh long enough without repenting, sin will gradually erode their faith until a time comes when they longer have the ability to believe in God. This is one of the scariest things that can ever happen but it is happening all the time, and the scriptures predict that it will happen on a large scale as a sign leading to the revelation of the antichrist (see 2 Thessalonians 2:3). Go into today remembering that willful and unrepentant sinning is an act of unbelief towards God. Continuing in such a circle can bring a believer to the point where he no longer has the ability to believe in God. Prayer: Lord, help me to maintain a clear conscience before you and before all men. God’s Kingdom Authority
1 Corinthians 3:18 (NET) Guard against self-deception, each of you. If someone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become foolish so that he can become wise. Certain incidences had revealed to Agu that he did not have so much spiritual stature and authority in the kingdom. He knew this when he spent time with some missionaries and saw how much of Christ’s authority they walked in and even exerted over their environment. Jesus could command the storm and speak to the fig tree because of this authority. Paul could effectively be a witness for Jesus in the darkest places of the world and was dreaded by demons because of this authority. Agu now knew that even though kingdom authority is inherited, we have to grow into it. Before he became born again, he was a very wealthy man in this world and was vast in the wisdom of this world. He now wanted the greatness of the kingdom of God but was still using the wisdom of this world. Many principles in the kingdom of God are antithetical to that of the kingdom of this world. For example, Jesus says those who are great in the kingdom of God are determined by their extent of service to others, not by the extent to which people serve them (see Matt 20:25-28). But it’s the opposite in this world. Also, in the kingdom of God, it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35), but in the kingdom of this world, it is considered more beneficial to get than to give. If a person thinks he is wise [according to the standards of this world], that wisdom cannot take him far in the kingdom of God. If he tries to use that kind of wisdom to advance in the kingdom of God, he will realize that he is making no progress. Like our Father in Heaven 2
Matthew 5:46-47 (NET) For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors do the same, don’t they? And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do? Even the Gentiles do the same, don’t they? After Trevor forgave Bill, he noticed that the peace of God that he once enjoyed was now restored. The next time he saw Bill, his heart no longer raced because of hatred, but he treated him normally and kindly like before. Even Bill was surprised because he expected Trevor to become unfriendly and mean to him. Bill started observing that Trevor was a believer in the Lord Jesus because he really wanted to know what it was about Trevor that made him have the power to overlook the evil he had done against him. He first thought Trevor was just acting so that he would revenge hard when he has the opportunity, but time passed and it was evident that Trevor had overlooked what he did. Because of this, he became afraid of Trevor and wanted to know more about the faith. Loving our friends is normal and expected, and it doesn’t reveal any power or special ability, but loving our enemies is proof that we have power that is not ordinary – the power of the divine life. The opportunity to forgive and love our enemies activates this power that we so desperately need to manifest in other areas of our lives. Go into today remembering that walking in divine love gives expression to the power of the divine life that we have. This is our strongest proof that we have indeed been fathered by God. Prayer: Heavenly Father, please give me the grace and power to walk in your divine nature of love and mercy. Like Our Father In Heaven
Matthew 5:44-45 (NET) But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be like your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. There was a logging error in the warehouse department of the company, and several crates of finished goods were unaccounted for. Bill wrote a report about it and lied that Trevor was the one responsible for the error. If Trevor were not so skilled at his job and kept his own personal logs, he would have lost his job because of the lie Bill told against him. When Trevor realized that Bill was the one who lied against him in the report, he started to nurse hatred in his heart towards Bill. But because Trevor was a believer, he observed that he could no longer commune with the Lord while hatred was being cultivated in his heart. He wept the day he decided to truly forgive Bill. But Trevor knew his communion with the Lord was too precious to forfeit because of the need to revenge. After months passed, it was evident to Trevor that he had been promoted spiritually and physically because of that tough decision he made to forgive Bill. When we love our enemies, it means we don’t repay evil for evil, but we even render help to them if they are in need (Romans 12:20). This is one of the strongest proofs that a person is truly born of God that shuts down every accusation against his rights to the privileges of sonship in God’s house. Because there is a day that God has set aside to judge the wicked, he provides for all people and allows his rain to fall on both the righteous and the wicked, hoping that the wicked will repent. That is the same mentality that keeps us from hating our enemies. We understand that no one can escape God’s judgment, and we show mercy hoping that they will change and find God’s grace the way we too found God’s grace. Secondly, because we understand that our destinies are not in the hands of our enemies but only in the hand of God, and the worst our enemies can do to us will only end up working together for our good(Genesis 50:20, Romans 8:28), we are not afraid of them but pity them. Go into today remembering to overcome every fear in your heart for anyone that is not the Lord God(See Matthew 10:28). One reason believers sin against the Lord by hating other people is because of deep-rooted fear and insecurity. Seek the Lord and get rid of every fear in your heart(Psalm 34:4). It is a sin to fear anyone but God. Fear is an anchor that prevents spiritual progress. Prayer: Lord, deliver me from all fear. He Shall Give His Angels Charge Over Thee
Psalms 91:11 (NKJV)For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. When Amara sleepwalked into the street at night as a little girl, she did not know that she was protected from danger that night by mighty angels. She got to know about this much later in her life when the sorcerer who had been monitoring her family to harm them confessed to her. He was now a Christian and he told her how they planned to kill her that night, but there were certain powerful angels protecting her. Angelic protection is more reliable than the best human security arrangement. Yet many times Christians take this for granted and do not take full advantage of it through faith. I remember the story of a celebrated American war hero who would never be killed in the harshest of battles. His fellow soldiers couldn’t understand his secret, he was simply fearless. He later told them that he was safer in the battlefield when in the center of God’s will than in the safest bunker when outside of God’s will. That was his reality. It was clear that he enjoyed angelic help. Many do not have faith in the protective power of God over them. For some it is because they are not sure they are walking in God’s will, for others, it is because they have not been properly taught. Walking in God’s will is made easy when you live in fellowship with God through His Spirit and let His word rule your life. Go Into today expecting to be protected by God’s mighty angels. Jesus has paid for this. Take up the helmet of salvation
Ephesians 6:17 (NET) And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. How do we take the helmet of salvation? From time to time, some evil thoughts would come to Grace’s mind to make her doubt her salvation. “Are you sure you’re truly born again? Are you sure you’re ready for the coming of the Lord?” These thoughts would throw her into restlessness to the point where she would start confessing the sins she had long repented of. Because of this that kept happening to her, she lived under a cloud of condemnation and was not confident enough to serve the Lord the way she ought to. She learned how to take up the helmet of salvation when she attended a conference and the teacher explained that her salvation was not her idea but God’s plan from the foundation of the world. She was also made to understand that God wants her saved more than she wants to be saved. The teacher now went on to explain how the fruits of a tree are the surest way to identify the tree. For the first time, she was made to understand this verse: 1 John 3:18-19 (NET) Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth. And by this we will know that we are of the truth and will convince our conscience in his presence. 1 John 4:7-8 reveals to us that it is only those who have been born of God that can walk in [unselfish] love. One of the biggest proofs we have to show that we are truly saved and belong to God is that we bear the fruit of love. Unselfish love is that kind of love that is not propelled by what we can get but is inspired by the desire to give and be a blessing. Go into today remembering that the way you will know for sure that you’re of the truth, and convince your conscience in His presence that you belong to God and have His nature is when your life bears the fruit of love. This is a sure way to take up the helmet of salvation and guard your mind against the accusations of satan. Prayer: Lord, help me walk in your nature of love and properly represent you in this world. Seated With Christ
Ephesians 2:6 (NET) and he raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus Nonye was really displeased with her stepmother because she didn’t attend her wedding. She had surgery and had to miss the wedding, but Nonye said to herself that if it were her own daughter, she would have still found a way to make it for the wedding. Such was the relationship between Nonye and her stepmother – filled with suspicion and misunderstanding. Nonye who had lost her mom when she was very young didn’t have the best relationship with her stop mother. When Nonye gave birth to her first child, her stepmother was the first to come and insist that she would stay to take care of the baby and her. Nonye was suspicious but this time, she was now more spiritually mature because she was married to a man who knew and feared the Lord. Former Nonye would have never allowed her stepmother to stay in her house, but because she was now more spiritually mature, she was more accommodating, less fearful, and less suspicious. She got to this point by realizing that abiding in christ meant his character and nature will manifest through her. While Nonye’s stepmother stayed in her house to take care of the baby, she observed that Nonye had truly changed. Nonye was now kind, gentle, humble, and very considerate. After one and a half months, Nonye’s changed life brought conviction to her stepmother’s heart and she accepted the Lord Jesus. The reason Nonye could lead her stepmother to the Lord was that she was now living like a representative of Christ. Today’s verse reveals what happens to us who are in Christ. Because we are in Christ, where He is seated is where we are too. This is made possible by the Holy Spirit who is our vital connection with Christ. Even though we are physically on the earth, through the Holy Spirit that dwells in us, we are connected to Christ. We dwell in Him and He in us. Go into today remembering that you should abide in Christ if you are born again. If you reckon yourself to dwell in Christ, then live and act like Him.
