Galatians 2:17-18 (NKJV)
But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not!
For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
A Certain preacher started an apostolic work on a university campus. Many of his converts were excited to come to the Lord through his ministry. They were happy to be free from the burden of legalism and religion as they understood that they are justified by Christ and not by their own works.
But as time passed, the preacher observed that many of his followers were now living like sinners and saying that ‘it does not matter’. It now appeared as if his ministry was giving certain Christians the license to walk in the flesh and feel secure. This was a big issue that brought great grief to his heart.
Apostle Paul understood that when we seek to be justified by Christ (and not by works of the law), there could be the temptation to wantonly walk in the flesh because we are no more under any moral code. That was why he took his time to warn Christians against walking in the flesh (see Rom 8:13, Gal 6:8, Gal 5:24, 1 Cor 10:1-12). That was why he made statements like the one in today’s Bible text.
The doctrine of justification by faith [through grace] may appear to make people comfortable in their sins, but that is when it is not properly and carefully taught or it is wrongly understood.
Go into today knowing that if it appears that the gospel you are hearing seems to make you comfortable in sin, you are either not hearing it right or it is not rightly divided by the person teaching you.
Prayer: Ask the Lord to give you an ear to hear right.
