Luke 14:8 (NKJV)
“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honourable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place.
Humility has become a buzz word with several opinions and views as to what it means. Some take it as being pious or gentile. However, Jesus taught us exactly what it should be as Christians. It is not taking the best place (the high table) simply because we think we deserve it. How many times have we been angry because we feel we are deserving of something that was offered to another person – Jesus calls it pride. How many times have we been angry amongst friends and colleagues because we feel we have not received the kind of treatment and respect we deserve?
The scriptures admonish us to esteem others above ourselves. Philippians 2:3 “…but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. This is not even about equality but esteeming others better than ourselves.
Are you disagreeing on principles or just because you think you are equal or better than others? How about your pastors and church leaders. Think about your daily interactions with equals, superiors, and subordinates; think about your relationship with husband, wife, parents, and authorities. What guides your interactions, Humility or the feeling of pride and/or equality? Pride is of the devil, it is his nature and in contrast to the life of Christ which is embedded in humility.
Prayer: Go into today asking the Holy Spirit to help you look into your heart and separate healthy and godly aspirations from pride.
