ENSLAVED BY SIN?
Romans 6:16 (KJV) Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Dare got to a point where he started to wonder whether he was still born again. He had literally been enslaved to certain sins, and it looked impossible for him to come out of them. Dare had been enslaved by these sins because he yielded himself to them from time to time. The unclean spirits responsible for those sins had enslaved him and he was now demonized even though he was a Christian. He received deliverance when he opened up to his pastor. His pastor prayed for him and delivered him in the name of Jesus. He maintained his deliverance by living a disciplined life and avoiding appearances of His past sins. As we can see in today’s Bible text, spiritual slavery to sin is real, and when a person is delivered from such, he must yield himself to righteousness and become a slave of righteousness, or else, he will end up being a slave of sin all over again. When with the help of the Holy Ghost you chose to walk righteously in all you do, you are yielding yourself to righteousness. As you go into today, remember that it is those who please God that see His face. Righteousness pleases God and sin displeases Him. Prayer: ask the Lord to make you a slave of righteousness and deliver you from every bondage of sin. HOW TO PUT ON YOUR NEW NATURE
1 Corinthians 1:30 (KJV) But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. A young ruler asked Jesus what he’ll do to have eternal life; Jesus told him “Keep the commandments”. Very excited he said “I’ve kept all the commandments right from my childhood days.” Jesus then said, “Sell all that you have, give it to the poor, then come and follow me.” The ruler walked away sad. He still loved his riches a little more than he wanted to follow Christ. Some Christians are comfortable when they’re told to observe certain rules and commandments, but like the young ruler, they walk away whenever the truth is told; they are not really ready to follow Christ. Living a righteous life is not by keeping of rules, regulations, and commandments. Even though a righteous person is a moral person, righteousness is not morality; it is more than what the mind can produce. Righteousness is God’s gift and only He can make a person righteous. 1 Corinthians 1:30 shows us that Christ is the one who make us righteous before God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin by dying on the cross for us”. But you have to believe in Him and follow Him in order to activate this in your life. Go into today remembering that God is the one who makes you righteous because you now follow Christ. Put on your new righteous nature by loving God above everything else Prayer: Thank you Jesus for making me righteous. Amen.—James Emmanuel & SD Abraham. RIGHTEOUSNESS BY GRACE
Galatians 2:21(KJV) I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Sharon: Now that I’m a Christian, How can I be truly righteous and free? Evelyn: that is a very good question. You see, holiness is something that without it you cannot see the Lord. If you want to be righteous, keep the Ten Commandments, read and understand the laws of God, and follow the laws of our church. When you do these things, you will be righteous before God. Even though Evelyn had good intentions, she couldn’t be more wrong. She was not showing Sharon the way of righteousness, she was showing her the way of legalism and bondage to laws. Evelyn should have said something like this: ‘Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Walk and live in the Spirit; study God’s word and pray regularly to enhance fellowship with God who is your father. Come to church and hear God’s word- it is able to renew your mind and make you become like Christ because hearing the word transmits grace’. Our Bible text today shows that it is possible to frustrate the grace of God in your life by trusting in rules and regulations as a means to accomplish righteousness. The grace of God transforms us from within and empowers us to be righteous naturally. Go into today renouncing every form of legalism that seeks to frustrate the grace of God in your life. Prayer: Ask the Lord to cleanse you from every mindset that hinders grace. PUT ON YOUR NEW NATURE 3
Ephesians 4:24 (NLT) Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. Growing up for Jerry was very rough, he’d lost both parents at age two and grew up as a teenager wearing torn clothes, sleeping on the street, and sometimes eating from the waste bin. An elderly rich woman had pity on him and took him in. She gave him a room; a wardrobe filled with new clothes and a big bed. This was the first time in years he saw a bed. Jerry wasn’t used to this new life and would still sleep on the bare floor; he wore the same old torn clothes. This became an embarrassment to the wealthy old woman who adopted him. Just like Jerry, many Christians today still live in their old life even when Christ has given them new life. Today’s Bible text reads “Put on your new life”. This life is yours once you’ve accepted Jesus as your Lord. You simply need to make the resolute decision to put on your new nature; trusting in the Holy Spirit to help you- He always does. Go into today knowing that the new nature (life) is already yours but you have to put it on and this is only with the help of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you put on your new nature. Pray this Prayer: I shake off all the remnants of the old nature in my life in Jesus’ name. I put on the nature of Christ in its fullness in Jesus’ name. Amen.—Dr. James Emmanuel. PUT ON YOUR NEW NATURE 2
Rom 6:10-11(NLT) When he (Christ) died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. 11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. Pastor John explained to Omeiza that everything Jesus did, He did for us. Jesus lived for us, died for us, and resurrected for us. His glory is also for us (the Church). Think about it, what glory do you think Jesus was exalted into after his death that He did not have from the beginning of creation? He stripped himself of His glory and became flesh so that we too might have life and glory through His resurrection. It is interesting how many Christians believe that Christ died for them, but they stop there; they fail to believe that He also resurrected them and is glorified for them. Christ died for us to deliver us from our sins; His death put to death our sinful nature; His resurrection brought to life His godly nature within us, and His glorification guarantees our glorification. Somebody reading this is receiving a healing today because Jesus has already paid for it. There is another person reading this devotional that is receiving a miracle of provision and abundance today. Go into this day with renewed assurance that God’s grace is available for you. He has made all things you need available for you through Christ Jesus (see 2 Pet 1:3). Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank you for your grace. I pray you help me walk more in the reality of it. PUT ON YOUR NEW NATURE 1
Romans 6:8-11(TMB) If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. Omeiza: Pastor, I have been struggling to live a Holy life. After I try so hard, I will later stumble and fall all over again. Pastor John: Jesus did not call you to struggle; He called you to rest (see Mat 11:28). I need to explain something to you: Do you remember that no one needed to teach you how to be a sinner? OM: Yes, it was in my nature since I was a child. PJ: True, we were all born with a sinful nature. The only way to be free from this nature is by dying (see Rom 6:7). Jesus has died this death for you. You were included in Him when He died for you, and you were in Him when He resurrected (see Rom 6:3-6). You now live a new life and this life is the life of Christ. Understanding this and living the life of Christ is the secret to living above sin. OM: I don’t understand. But I was not yet born when Christ died. PJ: Yes, but God knew everything about you before Christ died. Remember that God is the eternal ‘I am’; He exists in the past, present, and future all at the same time. To be continued… Go into today knowing that God does not expect you to live by your own strength, He wants you to live by faith in Christ Jesus through His Spirit (see Zac 4:6). Prayer confession: I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. WASHING AWAY FEARS 2
Proverbs 10:24 (NET) What the wicked fears will come on him; what the righteous desire will be granted. Terna was afraid he might lose his job. He was a marketer and was consistently failing to meet his targets. A routine appraisal had just been concluded and he had performed very poorly. “If I lose this job now, I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he thought. He sought the Lord in prayer and fasting concerning this fear and other fears that were lurking in his heart. The Holy Spirit comforted him and his fears started to fade away. A month later, Terna was transferred to another department. His work there was said to be outstanding; he was so good that the managing director got to know him personally. He later got a big promotion. Terna’s desires came to pass instead of his fears because he sought the Lord concerning them. In life, there are fears and cares that we face. The Lord wants us to cast all of them upon Him because He cares for us (see 1 Pet 5:7). One way you will know that you have successfully transferred your cares and fears to the Lord is that those fears and anxiety in your heart will begin to fade away. God’s word for you today is that your desires will be granted, not your fears. Go into today knowing that your desires will be granted because Christ Jesus has made you righteous by His blood, and His grace empowers you to walk righteously. Prayer: Thank the Lord for the opportunity to seek Him. WASHING AWAY FEARS 1
Psalm 34:4 (NET) I sought the Lord’s help and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Sometimes, fear is evidence of a negative spiritual reality that is on its way to becoming physical, just like faith is evidence of a positive spiritual reality that is on its way to becoming physical. We experience these because we are spirit beings. When we have dealt with our fears, it means the issues generating those fears have also been dealt with. We deal with fears by seeking the Lord. He is the one we have in heaven (the spirit realm) and He takes care of us (see Ps 73:25). We seek the Lord by praying to Him and telling Him about our fears. We can sometimes fast because fasting is a spiritual exercise that helps us better concentrate on seeking God’s face. In today’s Bible text, did you notice that David did not say the Lord delivered Him from all his troubles but he said the Lord delivered him from all his fears? I believe he understood that the secret to sustained victory is overcoming your fears. Fear is more dangerous than many people think; it is the vehicle through which darkness usually invades. People require faith to deal with God and receive from Him, but fear is a negative force against faith. Many times, when the Lord speaks to His people, he usually begins by saying ‘fear not’ (see Gen 15:1, 21:17, 26:24) The Lord is telling you today to FEAR NOT because He is with you. He has promised to never leave you nor forsake you (see Deu 31:6, Mat 28:20b). Prayer: Thank the Lord for being there for you in heaven and on earth (See Ps 73:25). INSTRUMENTS FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
Romans 6:12-14 (NLT) Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. 13 Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God When Ronke felt a little tired at the office, she would go to Ugo’s office and they would both ‘discuss’ about what is going on in the office; and what is going on in people’s houses. Ugo seemed to know everything about everyone in that office. After this continued for three weeks, it dawned on Ronke one day that she was now a professional gossip, and yet she knew better than that. She realized that she had been using her mouth as an instrument serving sin. She repented that day. The reason why many Christians give their bodies to sin is because they enjoy it. It wouldn’t be tempting if it were not enjoyable to the flesh. But since we are not to walk in the flesh but in the spirit, it is our responsibility to remind our minds that we are dead to sin but alive to righteousness. The mind needs constant reminders because it has been trained to walk in the flesh since you were born. But you are now born again, so your mind needs to be reminded to walk in your new nature. Go into today reminding yourself that you are now a new creature with a new nature. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you walk in your new nature. Prayer confession: I am dead to sin but alive towards God. I am walking in the divine nature: I am walking above greed, fear, pride, and all forms of lust, in Jesus’ name. ACCORDING TO YOUR FAITH
Matthew 9:29 (NIV) Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you” Looking at the works of the Lord Jesus in Matthew chapters 8 and 9, you would quickly observe that for everyone that believed Him for a miracle, He operated to the tune of their faith. For the synagogue leader who believed that if Jesus would come to his house and lay his hands on his daughter she would come alive, he had it that way (see Matt 9:18). For the woman with the issue of blood who believed she could touch the hem of his garment and be made whole, she also had it according to her faith (see Matt 9:21). And for the centurion whose faith Jesus commended, he believed Jesus needed only to speak the word and his servant would be made whole, and yes! He was made whole (see Matt 8:8). God’s resources are inexhaustible, the Bible says He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we can ask or think (see Eph 3:20). There is no need in heaven or earth too great for God to meet. We need to take off our ”myopic goggles” and start seeing God for who He really is- the Omnipotent God. Go into today believing God for great things in righteousness, knowing that He is well able to bring them to pass. Prayer: Lord, forgive me for every time I doubted you. Right now I believe you are able to deal with every situation in my life, and I know you will. Thank you Lord.
