1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
The only Spiritual gift that is peculiar to the New Testament church is the gift of tongues. Every other spiritual gift had been already present in the Old Covenant. Whereas all other gifts come as a result of the Holy Spirit upon a person, the gift of tongues comes as a result of the Holy Spirit upon and within a person. It came only after the Holy Spirit came to indwell people (see John 14:17, Acts 2:4).
When a believer prays in tongues, he is praying in partnership with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit prays for him with groans that cannot be uttered (Rom 8:26).
You see, in the new covenant, prayer is greatly emphasized (see Luke 18:1, Col 4:2, 1 Thes 5:17, Rom 12:12, Eph 6:18, etc.). It is emphasized much more than in the old covenant because it is the way grace is multiplied in the life of the believer. It is the way we fellowship with our Father and receive strength. It is the way we wrestle against our enemies and overcome. Because the new covenant is one of reality and not of shadows, there are many things of eternal ramifications that we will have to pray about, and our understanding is too limited to pray these prayers appropriately. That is why the Lord gave the church the gift of tongues. And it is primarily to help us pray in the spirit. It affords the Holy Spirit the ability to pray for us, yet we are the ones praying.
There are many things God wants to do for us. But He needs our input through our prayers. And many times we may not know to pray these prayers. But this problem is solved when we pray in tongues. He prays those prayers for us, yet it cannot be said in the courts of heaven that we weren’t the ones who prayed those prayers. Praying in tongues affords Him the occasion to help us in ways we did not even know we needed help.
