False Doctrines: Guard Your Heart
1 Timothy 1:3-4 (NET) As I urged you when I was leaving for Macedonia, stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not to spread false teachings, nor to occupy themselves with myths and interminable genealogies. Such things promote useless speculations rather than God’s redemptive plan that operates by faith. When Jide got to the campus, he started attending one of the campus fellowships reputed to be deep in the teaching of the word. But after a few weeks, he found that even though his head was full of very interesting and high sounding things, his heart was empty and his spirit lean. The teachers in that fellowship were given to [spooky] doctrines filled with speculations and logical inferences that didn’t align with the position of scripture. Many of the members of that fellowship were excited that they knew ‘deep things’, but because Jide had walked with the Lord and enjoyed the fellowship of the Holy Spirit (and the attendant growth) in an atmosphere of sound doctrine in the past, it didn’t take him long to discern that something was wrong with his new spiritual diet and fellowship. He had to leave that fellowship. When Apostle Paul wrote 1 Timothy, there were false doctrines circulating that sounded very powerful and logical, but they didn’t have the ability to produce faith unto fruitfulness but rather produced pride and weakness. False doctrines have been around since the first generation church. Unfortunately, many of them are spread by genuine believers who have not been properly taught but who have a zeal to teach. If believers dwell in them for long, they would produce nothing but leanness to their souls and make them puffed up rather than being built up. Sooner or later, when the storms and pressures of life come, such would be reduced to their real small size and might be crushed because they were not being built up but were being puffed up [like bread or puff-puff]. A crushed believer would have a shipwreck of faith. We would talk about this later. Go into today remembering that sound doctrine produces faith and love in the heart of the believer, and builds him up(see 1 Timothy 1:5). False doctrines only give a knowledge that puffs up(and produces pride). Be sensitive to doctrines you allow to enter your heart because out of it proceeds the issues of life. Prayer: Heavenly Father, Give me this day my daily bread(doctrine). Deliver me from the lure of false doctrines. In Jesus’ name. Amen. —Abraham Damilola Arigi Want to be saved? Spiritual Terrorism: Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23 (BBE) And keep watch over your heart with all care, so you will have life. The media is a powerful tool. Today, our eyes, ears, and minds are being inundated with all manner of reports (news, gossips, etcetera) that can cripple the faith of the unsuspecting. Marriage is one of its casualties. Every single marriage gone wrong is plastered across our TV screens, mobile phones and newspapers. Every single minister of the gospel whose marriage experiences some turbulence will receive such media attention that one can begin to subconsciously accept that to be the truth about marriages. It so concentrates on the wrong example and displays deliberate amnesia for all the ones going right. That’s an act of terror; using a few ‘celebrated’ failures in some to inspire terror, fear, and despair in the hearts of many. It conveniently forgets to mention that for every single marriage broken down in a celebrated man of God, there exist a dozen marriages going according to God’s pattern. But the statistic is not even a determining factor here. I mean, what if for example the statistics actually tilts against the marriages that still stand firm, would that make any difference? Empathically No! Even if there exists just one, working in conformity with God’s standard, we look on to Jesus for light and draw encouragement from that single righteous example. That’s the way to go. Needless to say, marriage is not the only one under attack by this spiritual terrorism, ministers of the gospel, giving, sexual purity, etc. However, whatever case it is, Isaiah 8:12 offers valuable counsel: Do not say, ‘conspiracy’ every time these people say the word. Don’t be afraid of what scares them; don’t be terrified (NET). The next verse says to rather fear the Lord. Don’t be afraid (or even ashamed) to live God’s way, to approach marriage God’s way, to give, to stay pure. Watch what you hear, watch the company you keep, fill yourself with God’s word, and watch his word shape your reality. Prayer: Lord, help me guard my heart with all diligence and live a fruitful life. Amen. —Ikechukwu Mpama Want to be saved? Kingdom Approach to Work 2
Colossians 3:23-24 (KJV) And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Because of Grace’s experience before and after her attitudinal change to work, she now took it upon herself to enlighten those who were caught up in her mistake of the past. Sandra was one of those she shared her story with. Sandra, however, did not listen to Grace because unlike grace, she never had a struggle with finance” if God is not pleased with me, why is He blessing me” she thought. If you are like Sandra who seemed to have enjoyed being blessed in spite of unfaithfulness to work, remember that the ultimate reason for your job is not just so you could have money, you are there as Christ’s ambassador. Philippians 2:14-15 (KJV) ‘‘do all things without murmurings and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world’’. It is by being blameless and harmless that you tell the world that you are a son of God. It is by these virtues that you will be able to shine as light and correct the wrongs in your workplace. Go into today knowing that God is aware of the perversion in your workplace and has sent you there to shine as light. Pray this way, Lord I will shine your light in my workplace by following your precepts for work. Kingdom Approach To Work
Colossians 3:23-24 (KJV) And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. After working with a government establishment for twenty years, Grace continued to struggle financially. She was very committed to prayers, evangelism, and other Church activities but she was lackadaisical with her job, and this was the general attitude of her coworkers too. They would often say ‘‘it’s government work, I cannot kill myself for it’’. Grace had gotten all her due promotions when they were due but things were very tight for her financially. Her frustration led her to seek counsel from her Pastor who by the word of knowledge told her that her attitude to her job had been a hindrance to her financial freedom. Grace turned over a new leaf and began to do her work as to the Lord; putting her best to her job. After she changed her attitude to her job, her financial struggles ended. She received wisdom to better manage her resources, and new financial doors opened to her. Ecclesiastes 9:10 (KJV) says ‘‘Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might…’’ and in Philippians 2:14-15 (KJV), we are to ‘‘[d]o all things without murmurings and disputings: that [we] may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom [we] shine as lights in the world’’. If you are a child of God, you must do all your works as to the Lord. This is how you will be distinguished from the perverse and crooked coworkers among whom you are to shine as light. Your workplace is a platform for evangelism. Go into today knowing that God is the one who rewards you when your work is done as unto Him. Prayer Confession: I will do my work as to the Lord and shine as God’s light in my workplace in Jesus’ name. Amen. —Dr. Emmanuel James Want to be born again? Delivered From The Power of Darkness
Colossians 1:13-14 (NET) He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. When Anabel became a believer, it was now clear to her that she was under the power of darkness when she was an unbeliever. She lived in fear and suspicion. She used to go to church every Sunday because she saw the church as a place where people went to collect blessings and protection. She had several bottles of anointing oil in her house from different pastors. In spite of the fact that she was a churchgoer, she also used to make charms. Her first husband used to be her boyfriend. It was through charms that she tied him and manipulated him to marry her. The marriage fell apart when he lost his oil company job. Because of her many sins, she found it difficult to believe that God would ever want anything to do with her. This was the major reason she didn’t accept the Lord Jesus. But the day someone explained the message of the cross to her, and she saw how that Jesus who was perfect and innocent suffered and died for her sins, she knew she could be forgiven. She understood that her forgiveness was solely based on the sacrifice of Jesus. When she received this forgiveness and accepted the Lordship of Christ over her life, she was no longer under the dominion of darkness and she knew this. She was no longer a slave to sin and fear. She no longer lived in constant fear and suspicion. Her mind was now liberated. She could now think straight and properly without the help of drugs. Unfortunately, there are some in the church today who are not totally free from the dominion of darkness because they have not received the lordship of Christ fully. Jesus does not yet control every area of their lives. They still hold onto their old philosophies and maxims. Mammon is still their Lord. But understanding that you have complete redemption and forgiveness of sins in Christ Jesus generates a natural response of total surrender to His Lordship. Jesus cannot truly be the Lord of your life and demons still have dominion over you. He is a jealous Lord. The degree to which your life is submitted to the Lordship of Christ is the degree to which you would walk in His authority and dominion. Go into today thanking God for delivering you from the dominion of darkness and bringing you into the dominion of light through His redemption and forgiveness. Prayer: Ask the Lord to help you grow in your walk in the light and become an agent of light yourself. The Holy Spirit My Advantage
Romans 8:14 (KJV) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised the [Gift of the] Holy Spirit who is to guide, comfort, teach believers, amongst other things He is to do in and through the believer. In Acts 2:1-4, we saw the fulfillment of that promise. Today, as soon as a person accept Jesus as his Saviour and Lord, he receives a measure of the Holy Spirit and can be baptized in the Holy Spirit [with the evidence of speaking in tongues]. Jesus couldn’t have been effective in His ministry on earth without the help of the Holy Spirit. Acts10:38 says, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. For this reason, He gave believers that same Spirit which empowered Him to fulfill His purpose on the earth. Today, we have the advantage of the Holy Spirit because He is not only with us but He is in us (John14:17) to guide us in the way we should go (Isaiah 30:21), to teach us all things we need to know (1John 2:20). As a believer, when at crossroads just take out time to pray in the Holy Spirit: for out of your belly shall flow rivers of living waters (rivers of divine possibilities, of ideas, direction, wisdom)( Jude 20, John 7:38). As believers, we should always walk in the knowledge that the Holy Spirit is a Person and He seeks deep intimacy with us every day. The more intimate we are with the Holy Spirit the more we get to know the ways of our Father and as a result, walk in multiplied grace and victory(see 2 Peter 1:2). Go into today knowing that the Holy Spirit lives in you(if you are born again). Deliberately and consciously cultivate intimacy with Him for He is your greatest advantage in this life. Prayer: Father, help me walk in deeper intimacy with the Holy Spirit. Amen. —George Evuarherhe Djorhogba Want to be born again? Lessons From Shunem: Persevere in prayers
Luke 18:1 ((NET) Then Jesus told them a parable to show them they should always pray and not lose heart. (Read 2 Kings 4:27-37) Have you ever prayed about something, prayed really earnestly and yet it didn’t seem to bulge? Well if you have, you are in good company with prophets and patriarchs of old. However, today’s lesson teaches us how they eventually got the victory. Unanswered prayers seem to be the perfect recipe for discouragement. However, we don’t have to give in to discouragement or lose heart, there is a better way. In the story of the Shunamite woman in 2 Kings 4, there came a time when the woman lost her child and came to the man of God in petition and supplication. Elisha, a man with the double portion of the spirit of Elijah, made to meet her request, which was to raise her son from the dead. First, he commanded Gehazi, his assistant, to take his staff and to lay it on the child’s face. Gehazi did as Elisha instructed him and guess what? Nothing happened. Bible puts it this way, “The youngster has shown no sign of awakening” (vs 31c ISV). There was no sign. This sounded like a good point to give up and say; at least I tried, but not Elisha. Next, Elisha came to the house. The boy was lying on Elisha’s bed and room. Elisha shut the door and prayed unto the Lord, then he went and stretched himself upon the child, and then the child’s body grew warm, but he was still not up. Next, after walking to and fro the house, Elisha came back to the boy and once again stretched himself upon the boy and this time the boy sneezed seven times and came back to life. Nothing but discouragement happens when you give up, but true victory belongs to those who persevere in prayers, like Daniel (Daniel 10:1-15), like Elijah (1 Kings 18:42-43), Like Zacharias (Luke 1:1-13), like you. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Pray until answers come. Let us pray. Prayer: Lord, help me never to give in the place of prayers. Help me to always have testimonies. Lessons From Shunem: The Victor’s Attitude
Philippians 4:4 (NET) Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. (Read 2 Kings 4:18-37) 2 Kings 4:18-37 makes for an interesting read. The woman whom the Lord had given a child through the word of Prophet Elisha had what can be described as a life-altering experience. Her child died. Bible records that the boy was with his father in the fields when he began to feel pain in his head. The father asked that the boy be taken to the mother. When he came to the mother at home, he died on her knees. What followed next is very instructive. Here was this woman with her only child, which she received by Elisha’s prophetic intervention, dead. What will she do? How will she take it? How will she ever be consoled? But here is what she does. She sends to her husband to send her transportation (an ass) and a driver (a young man) so she could go to the man of God. She didn’t bring down the roof with weeping and ululation; she had a plan (vs 18-22). Next, observe her disposition and her responses in the face of this tragedy. Firstly, she takes the child and lays him on the bed of the prophet and shut the door, reminds me of 1 Peter 5:7 that says to put all our burdens on the Lord for He cares for us. Then when her husband asked her why she was going to see the man of God seeing as there was no special occasion (he had no idea the boy had died), she replied, it is well. Next, she instructed the driver to keep driving and not to slow down or stop until they got to the man of God. It was clear in her heart where she needed to be at such a moment as this (vs 23&24). Again, when Gehazi the prophet’s servant approached her and inquired if all was well, she kept her confession, it is well. This isn’t positive speaking, she was going to the place where she was certain solutions will spring from, and when she got there, she grabbed the Prophet’s feet, and the Bible records in verse 37 that she received her boy back from the dead. There is a place for weeping and there is a place for praying (never substitute one for the other), but there is absolutely no place for worrying. Whatever tempts you to worry is certainly something you should be praying about. Worry about nothing, pray about everything, and while you are at it, ensure your lips echo your faith. Make prayer your first resort, and hold fast to your confession of faith. Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me always have the victor’s attitude and proceed from victory unto victory. Lessons From Shunem: Honor
Matthew 10:41a (NET): Whoever receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. (Read 2 Kings 4:8-17). Honour is a key virtue in God’s kingdom. It comes from discerning the grace of God and placing the right value on it. Jesus spoke often about it and the apostles did too in the epistles. Honour, as the Bible teaches it, is not just about the person, it is about the authority and grace of God on that person. Again, Bible honor is not just respect; it also manifests in acts of service. In Matthew 15 verses 4 to 6, Jesus referencing honor for parents illustrated it with giving. Apostle Paul did the same in 1 Timothy 5:17&18. The woman in Shunem (2 Kings 4:8-10) provides us a great lesson in honor. Firstly, she insisted and persuaded Elisha to have a meal in her house every time he passed by. Secondly, she made renovations in her house and bought extra furniture so as to accommodate Elisha. She said: Why don’t we add on a small room upstairs and furnish it with a bed and desk, chair and lamp, so that when he comes by he can stay with us (vs 10 MSG). Note that she didn’t do this because Elisha was a hungry homeless man. Rather read verse 9: “I’m certain,” said the woman to her husband, “that this man who stops with us all the time is a holy man of God” (MSG). She did it simply because he was a man of God. Not as charity, not for a blessing, not for her needs or selfish ends but for honor sake. Honour allows for the power of God to flow effectively in our lives. In Mark 6:1-6, you see Jesus could do no mighty works in his own hometown. They failed to discern him as the Son of God but as the son of the carpenter. Their lack of honor festered and fostered unbelief. In contrast, in the story of the centurion (Matt 8:1-13), he rightly discerned the authority and the grace of Jesus and Jesus commended his great faith and his servant was healed. Go into today determined to make honor your lifestyle, always being ready to give honor where it is due, not for eye-service, but for honor’s sake. This is one of the keys to unleashing the power of the divine life. Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me give honor to whom it is due and help me receive the reward thereof. In Jesus’ name. Understanding The Lord’s Will 5
Proverbs 4:7-8 (KJV) Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. Aarav became five times more successful in his business when he started running it according to the principles of God’s kingdom. At first, it was looking as if he would not make as much profit because he reduced his interest rates and improved his quality of service. It looked as if he was committing business suicide, but with time, he established himself as the most trusted name in that business in his city. No one had the volume of turn over that he had, and he started making more profit than those with ungodly interest rates. Yesterday we saw that the true definition of walking in wisdom is walking in the will of God (see Ephesians 5:17). Those who seek the will of God in all things are those who seek to walk wisely in all things. Every foolish decision I have ever made in my life was made because I did not consider the will of God as the top priority in that decision-making process. If you truly seek the will of God as the top priority of your life, you will find it, if you seek it with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 says (KJV) And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. It takes faith to connect with the will of God and see the wisdom therein. Faith provides a better sight than natural sight, that is why we should walk by faith and not by sight (see 2 Corinthians 5:7). When walking in faith, patience is required. Hebrews 6:12 (KJV) That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Go into today determined to walk in the will of God as your top priority. Remember that wisdom is the principal thing, and walking in the will of God is the way to walk wisely. Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to exalt your will and walk wisely all the days of my life.
