Romans 5:20-6:2 (NET)  Now the law came in so that the transgression may increase, but where sin increased, grace multiplied all the more, so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

What shall we say then? Are we to remain in sin so that grace may increase? Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

The dirtier a cloth is,  the more the quantity of detergent that would be provided by the cleaner in order to clean it. When an article of white clothing has been truly dirtied such that ordinary detergent cannot properly clean it,  a good laundryman would bring out the bleach and apply it. But he would not apply bleach to clothe merely dirtied by sweat.

But you don’t say because there is abundant detergent in the house,  you will intentionally dirty your cloth.  That’s acting like an undisciplined child.

The more sin abounded,  much more grace was required to fix sin. It was important that the law came first because it provided a basis for the abundant grace that would occasion the coming of Jesus. When the law came,  sin only abounded the more because people now not only disobeyed the laws of God they understood intuitively through conscience,  they also disobeyed the commands of God now telling them not to sin. Sin was now double disobedience because of the law that came.

Thus,  it became necessary for the ultimate sacrifice to atone for sins. That’s why it is to the people the law came that grace came to also.

Go into today remembering that if you are in Christ,  you are dead to sin and alive to righteousness. Regardless of your experience or defeats,  insist on this by faith,  and act accordingly by fleeing all appearances of evil.  You will find God’s power of grace if, by faith, you continue to reckon yourself dead to sin. Remember,  grace is received through faith.

Prayer: heavenly father, help me reckon myself dead to sin and walk in your abundant grace. Amen.
